PRESENTATION OF TABLES

What has not been done in the presentation of tables for this lathe, as has been done for the other lathes covered thus far, is to list all the wheels needed to create all the various pitch options. The lathes, when they were despatched, were given a selection of twenty-two wheels anyway (twenty-four in the case of the metric machine).

The imperial lathe was despatched with the following change wheels for all the pitches that the factory provided gearing information for. These included 31, 35, 39, 43, 46, 48 (3 off) 50, 52, 53, 59, 60, 73, 77, 81, 100, 102, 120 and 127 teeth.

Many of them have been called upon in the new tables anyway and I considered that the value of any such list might be quickly lost if only new wheels were tabulated. To include the original complement along with the additions would add to the complexity, so the tables have been presented as stand-alone features in their own right and list the wheels needed at the foot of each.

In all these tables, to avoid any confusion with existing machine plates and handbook descriptions, the same wheel nomenclature that was used by Smart and Brown has been retained. Wheel A would equate to the stud wheel (the term used by Southbend) or mandrel wheel (the term used by Myford).

Wheels B and C are termed as the inter-stud wheels in the change wheel gearing and wheel D is the change wheel supplying the gearbox (called the screw gear by Southbend or by Myford it becomes the gearbox/leadscrew wheel). In Chapter 10 we will see these identities being used for the mini lathe.
